I immigrated from London to San Francisco as a child, and it was there, as a middle schooler at The Hamlin School, that I first dreamed of becoming a film director. Returning to San Francisco for the SFJFF sneak preview of my new film “Janis Ian: Breaking Silence” about the life and music of the extraordinary singer-songwriter Janis Ian was that dream come true.
One word sums up last Sunday’s experience: “gratitude.” Thank you to Lexi Leban of the SFJFF for being so passionate about presenting a preview of our film. Thank you to Janis Ian for showing up and sharing her brilliance with such honesty, humility, and humor, to my colleagues Producers Alessandra Pasquino and Brooke Wentz for being there and for their enduring support, to our Angel Supporter Susan Lowenberg for attending, and my Co-writer and EP Pierre Hauser who was there in spirit (along with all our funders and collaborators). Thank you to fellow Hamlin’s middle school students and Bay Area friends who showed up.
And much gratitude to our generous audience for their laughter, tears, applause, and startling enthusiasm. Thank you all. FYI, to keep updated on future screenings, enter your contact information at our website JanisIanDocumentary.com
